The Rufus latest version 3.5 gives a DOWNLOAD button that appears alongside the SELECT button. And then when you have everything in place, you can simply eject the USB Flash Drive. If you want to create a bootable USB drive from Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, you can also download an ISO file with Rufus (apart from downloading it from the internet) and then burn it to the USB drive. Once complete, review the contents of the external drive and double check whether the files were correctly copied over to it.Luckily for Rufus, it is one of the fastest applications that can flash images to the drive. There is not much to do at this point but wait until the process finishes. The length of the process depends on the size and number of files to copy. Boot the server from the USB Flash Drive and select the same device during the installation.

Disconnect the USB/SD device from your computer and connect it to your server where you want to install ESXi. Specifically for my case, I’ll be upgrading from VMware ESXi 6.5.0 (build 5969303) to VMware ESXi 6.7 (build 15160138).

Rufus will now create your bootable ESXi Installer USB Flash Drive. The version of ESXi is a bit old and overdue for an upgrade so I thought this would be a good opportunity to document the process for anyone else interested in the ESXi upgrade process. When you are decided, review the contents and choose to start copying. Select Yes when it asks to replace menu.c32.Thus, make sure that you are aware of the files in your flash drive before you candidate it as the bootable device. This is so that the hardware can have a clean device to work with. When you start, you will be prompted with message that all the data existing in the USB Flash Drive will be formatted first. Make sure that you review everything before beginning the process. Choose to create the bootable disk and you should be able to proceed in choosing the ISO image to be flashed.Since Rufus can support various configurations and customizations on the partition of disks and file system structures, you can adjust them according to your preference. Upon launching the Rufus app, it should be able to detect the flash drive immediately.

In this tutorial I’ve downloaded the portable version of Rufus (version 2.14p) and the VMware ISO (version 6.5. Make sure that you get the latest release since it would have recent improvements in the package. Download the VMware ESXi 6.5 ISO (free to download but you need a VMware account). It is a free application so you should be able to get them with less hassle. In case you have not installed Rufus in your computer, you can feel free to go through the web and look for distribution sites for it. After which, you can insert the Flash Drive and find the Rufus application to launch.
